How to play a VGC Regional (3 of 5): your team and the open team list

In VGC your team is locked in before play starts and isn't touched until the end, and the 2027 season uses open team lists: your opponent knows what each of your Pokémon carries. We go through the official handbook's rules and how to prepare a mistake-free list, because a sloppy list is one of the silliest ways to lose a game.

The team rules

The VGC Tournament Handbook sets the rules of the standard format. Your team is registered in a Battle Team and has to stay the same from the start of the competition to the end, with every other unlocked Battle Team empty. It holds between four and six Pokémon depending on the format; at Regionals, six, from which you pick four each game.

You can't have two Pokémon with the same National Pokédex number or two holding the same item. Only Pokémon obtained in Pokémon Champions, transferred from Pokémon HOME or received at official events are allowed, and level doesn't matter: in battle everyone is set to level 50. The only Ability banned by name is Battle Bond.

Each tournament also uses the regulation in force on its dates. Reg M-C runs from September 9 to December 2, 2026, so it's the one for the Stuttgart Regional.

What goes on the list and what your opponent sees

The list records your name, your in-game Trainer name, your Player ID and your date of birth, and for each Pokémon: the species with its form, Ability, held item, moves, all its stats and its nature. The form is required whenever it changes something in battle: Wash Rotom, not Rotom, and for Indeedee, which changes with gender, gender counts as the form.

Your opponent sees everything except the stats. They know your moves and item, but not whether your Incineroar is fully bulky or runs some Speed. Lists are exchanged once you connect with your opponent and can be checked throughout the match; if you don't understand your opponent's list, call a judge right then, not afterwards.

When and how to submit it

At Regionals the list is usually submitted through RK9's Team List Creator, in any language you like: judges see it translated, although the handbook recommends using the same language as your game to avoid mistakes. In Stuttgart, submission closes on November 28 at 7:30 Berlin time, and the tournament starts at 8:30.

Some events also ask for a Team ID: the code Pokémon Champions gives you when you share a Battle Team through Replica Teams. If you're asked for one, don't delete or change that Battle Team until the event is over, and don't use a Team ID from another account unless a judge tells you to.

How not to get the list wrong

The list is the official record of your team, and if your in-game team doesn't match it you can be penalized. Judges check the teams of everyone who makes top cut, plus a share of the rest.

What we recommend, as our own take: build the team in the teambuilder, compare it field by field with your in-game Battle Team (Ability, item, nature, every move and every stat) and submit it with days to spare. And double-check forms: it's easy to write Rotom instead of Wash Rotom or get Indeedee's gender wrong.

Watch your nicknames too: your opponent can see them, so they can't be offensive, you can't have two the same and a Pokémon can't be named after another one, like a Raichu called Pikachu.
