The sun team that won two Regionals

One team winning a Regional can be down to the player. Almost the same team winning two in a row, with two different players, says something about the format. This is how Reg M-C sun works.

Two champions, one core

Juan Salerno won Recife (October 3-4) and Joseph Ugarte won Louisville (October 10-11, with more than a thousand players). Their teams share Mega Charizard Y, Venusaur, Garchomp, Incineroar and Sylveon. The sixth slot differs: Salerno brought Toxapex and Ugarte, Farigiraf.

These are the items on Ugarte's team according to the list published on Pokémon Zone. Open team lists do not always include every detail, so take them as a guide.

The sun: Charizard Y and Venusaur

Mega Charizard Y has Drought: when it Mega Evolves it sets sun for five turns. In sun, Fire moves deal 50% more damage and Water moves half, so Charizard's attacks hit very hard and its weaknesses are softened.

Venusaur has Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed in sun. That lets it move before almost the whole meta without needing Tailwind, and in sun Solar Beam needs no charge turn. The Focus Sash makes sure it survives one hit from full HP.

The support: Incineroar, Sylveon and Garchomp

Incineroar lowers both opponents' Attack with Intimidate when it comes in and can use Fake Out to buy a turn. It is the Pokémon that keeps the rest alive, and its Chople Berry halves the first Fighting-type hit, its big weakness.

Sylveon, with Pixilate, turns its Normal-type attacks into stronger Fairy moves; its Hyper Voice hits both opponents. It covers what the sun does not: Dragons like Salamence and Garchomp, which resist Fire.

Garchomp with a Choice Scarf is the fast Pokémon that cleans up. Its Earthquake punishes the Fire, Steel and Electric types that trouble the rest of the team.

The sixth: Toxapex or Farigiraf

It is the only difference between the two champions and it tells you what each one feared. Toxapex is extremely bulky and slows down physical attackers. Farigiraf has Armor Tail, which stops opponents from using priority moves against its side: no Fake Out or Sucker Punch into Venusaur or Charizard.

How to beat it

Sun depends on Charizard Mega Evolving and staying healthy. An opposing weather (rain with Pelipper, sand with Tyranitar) wipes the sun when it comes in after, which is why the rain that won Nice arrived just one week later. Trick Room hurts it too: it takes away Venusaur's Speed advantage.

If you want to try it, the tournaments page has the sun teams with their PokéPaste to take into Showdown, and the damage calculator shows how hard Charizard hits in sun.
